This qualification is part of the Community Services Training Package. It reflects the role of workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, who provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision.

The Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE) is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). Both organisations share a commitment to Indigenous student outcomes and currently occupy unique positions in the Australian tertiary education sector, having a critical focus on regional, remote and Indigenous education in some of the most challenging environments in the country. Where work involves a specific focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or culturally diverse clients or communities, one or both of the following electives is recommended: Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The following elective is required in some jurisdictions to meet legislative requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse: Identify and respond to children and young people at risk. In some jurisdictions it is a condition of employment that Education Support Workers are competent in basic first aid.
Life after Study
Community workers encourage and assist community groups to identify their needs, participate in decision-making and develop appropriate services and facilities to meet those needs.
Education aides assist teachers with the supervision and support of students and the delivery of learning programmes. They also provide support and assistance to students with special needs, including those with physical or intellectual disabilities, or behavioural issues.
