This qualification is part of the Metal and Engineering Training Package. Apprentices would normally install and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The work includes fault finding and repair of compressors, chillier units, blower unit fan systems, electrical/electronic control units, air balance units, refrigeration recharge units, the fabrication of pipes and component fitting, and working with electrical/electronics circuits and refrigerant gasses. Apprentices would mainly be employed in small businesses servicing both domestic equipment (e.g. air conditioners, fridges and freezers) and industrial plant (e.g. cool stores, large snap freezers). Apprentices involved in this type of work could be workshop based but normally work from mobile vans. Apprentice will use specialist measuring equipment and a range of hand tools. Work would be conducted from detailed drawings and would use the following equipment: pipe manufacturing tools (flaring tools, pipe cutters etc.); welding equipment including electric and gas brazing/silver soldering; and materials handling equipment. They may also use workshop equipment such as lathes, hydraulic presses, bending machines, and fabrication equipment.

Life after Study
Mechanical engineering tradespersons carry out a range of mechanical work on machines, subassemblies and manufactured parts using a range of processes, tools and machines.
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics select components, assemble, install, test, fault-find, service and repair industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems in homes, shops, factories, office buildings, hospitals, supermarkets and cold stores.
Trade measurement officers monitor the marketplace with respect to goods sold by measure to ensure the accuracy of claimed or advertised measurements. Typical transactions using measurement include fuel purchased for motor vehicles and goods purchased by weight in supermarkets.
