Jessica Isgro

Studying: Bachelor of Music

Melbourne Polytechnic means opportunity for Jessica Isgro, a second-time-around student working hard for her Bachelor of Music, majoring in voice.

Jessica embarked on a music gig with Melbourne Polytechnic, back in its NMIT days, through an Advanced Diploma in Music in the early 2000s. Once achieving the advanced diploma, she went on to start the newly introduced Bachelor of Music. At 19, however, she was overwhelmed with the work and challenge — and life — so left to pursue another soulful career in alternative therapy and massage.

But music has always been Jessica’s thing. ‘I was mesmerised by rock clips and music videos, and knew from an early age that music and singing were my destiny.’ As a side bonus to great chops, Jessica also plays guitar and has written her own music since she was 12.

Ten or so years and vast numbers of massages later, a more mature (and very supple) Jessica decided to pursue her dream of attaining a Bachelor of Music. As with all big decisions, she received lots of well-meaning advice on where to enrol but had always had great faith in Melbourne Polytechnic, its ‘reputation on the music circuit’ and the fact she was familiar with the teaching staff and programs. Jessica re-enrolled in the Bachelor of Music and the rest, as they say in all good music books, is history.

Suffice to say, Jessica has not looked back. She enjoys a ‘mish mash’ of soul and lyrical singing, contemporary jazz and a ‘healthy dose of blues’. She sings and works with other students too and you can catch them gigging around Fitzroy and Northcote. Jessica loves that she can call fellow student friends and say ‘Hey, I’ve got a gig, are you interested?’. They get to work and study together, and Jessica has met some of her closest friends at Melbourne Polytechnic.

What’s next for Jessica?

Her own business! This will involve experimenting in and offering music therapy sessions. Having already enjoyed a professional life helping others to express, unwind and relax, she will continue this while incorporating music — using group singing, humming, stretching and chilling to original compositions and specially chosen pieces in a music/yoga setting. She already has a venue lined up — look out for it in Fitzroy!
