The institute’s long history reflects the rise of vocational education in Victoria over the course of the 20th century and well into the new millennium. Throughout the last decade, Melbourne Polytechnic has adopted pathways and progressive programs, presenting students with a career-focused holistic learning experience.
Melbourne Polytechnic gives you the best of both worlds — the theoretical learning of a university with the hands-on approach of vocational learning. This rigorous and rich environment allows you to pinpoint your exact career right up to degree level in most cases. With a polytechnic, particularly at Melbourne Polytechnic, you are getting a wide range of courses at different levels of accreditation.
Offering degrees, diplomas and certificates, Melbourne Polytechnic was also the first vocational training institution to offer contemporary education in Victoria, providing direct pathways to degree level, with industry and professional career-focused programs in the arts, social and related behavioural sciences, engineering, education and natural sciences, and technology, engaging students through applied learning and theory.
Melbourne Polytechnic will work with you through a diverse range of innovative, hands-on practical skills and modern theoretical learning as your learning and career partner.
We will give you the knowledge and skills to leap into an evolving and challenging marketplace and be a leader in your chosen field. Melbourne Polytechnic offers the perfect combination of higher education and vocational learning, delivered by teachers with real-world experience and expertise.
We want you to be your best and excel in what you do.
For over a century, Melbourne Polytechnic has delivered practical and professional education to the northern suburbs of Melbourne, from trade beginnings as Collingwood Tech, through to NMIT and onto Melbourne Polytechnic.
Throughout the last decade as NMIT, we have adopted pathways and programs that are progressive in today’s education market, offering students a career-focused holistic learning experience.
In October 2014, NMIT changed its name to Melbourne Polytechnic. This change of name was part of a wider, strategic process to transform the institute to a more contemporary provider of high-quality education and student experiences.
Melbourne Polytechnic has grown beyond the scope of a traditional TAFE to a training model that blends hands-on learning and traditional theory with greater options in, and a variety of pathways to, higher education.
'Polytechnic' fits much better with what the institute offers today and has greater recognition internationally — particularly across Europe and Asia. Additionally, our name reflects the broadening of the institute's operations to markets outside northern metropolitan Melbourne.
Melbourne Polytechnic welcomes international students! Courses available to international students are nationally accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) in accordance with the Education for Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislative framework, and registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). All courses are recognised internationally.
With a big presence in Melbourne’s expanding northern corridor, campuses can be found in Preston, Epping, Heidelberg, Fairfield and Collingwood. We’re in the south too, with a campus on High Street, Prahran , just off the Prahran/South Yarra hub of Chapel Street.
Designed to provide a fully interactive experience facilitated by our friendly Education and Career Advisors (ECAs), each Melbourne Polytechnic learning and careers centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technology (and, importantly, a barista-operated coffee machine) to help you navigate through the information you need.
If you would like career counselling or help finding where our courses are offered, our highly trained ECAs are there to help.
