Developed in consultation with leading practising art and design professionals and educators, the Bachelor of Design Arts responds to industry expectations about contemporary creative practice; that graduates today need complementary skills in a range of areas. The course offers a choice of major and sub major subject combinations, along with both compulsory and selective core and contextual studies subjects. Over three years, all students develop their visual literacy, deepen their understanding of the historical context of major artistic and design movements, and build up a skill set in arts and project management, and business communications. Career options for graduates vary in relation to majors and sub majors, but can include creative director, branding consultant, fashion designer and producer, web designer, packaging designer, photographer, set designer, practicing artist or commercial illustrator.

Entry Requirements:

Direct application to the academy only via academic entry or creative entry; Academic Entry - Year 12 Australian Secondary Education qualification with an ATAR of 60 or equivalent OR A Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree qualification in the design arts, plus successful entrance interview and folio presentation; Creative Entry - Prior industry/work experience, and/or completed units of a degree, associate degree or diploma from an accredited institution, plus successful entrance interview and folio presentation OR Submission of a design portfolio (6-10 pieces of original creative work), plus successful entrance interview OR Participation in a pre-selection kit (when no design portfolio exists), plus a successful entrance interview; International Applicants - in addition to one of the entry options above, must have an equivalent IELTS 6.0 (Academic) with no skills band less than 5.5


Six major subjects and 3 sub major subjects; compulsory and selective core and contextual studies; professional placement during second and third years.

Founded in 1998, the Academy of Design Australia (ADA) offers a unique Bachelor of Design Arts that allows students to take major/sub-major combinations in a range of creative fields, including Communication Design, Fashion & Costume Design, Filmmaking & Photography, Graphic & Digital Design, Interior Design, and Visual Arts. The Bachelor of Design Arts (BDA) was developed for exclusive delivery by the Academy of Design, in conjunction with creative industry leaders. It is the only such degree offered in Victoria and offers a range of features, including:par -the equivalent contact hours to a 4-year degree, completed in 3 yearspar -an integrated program that provides a balance of major, sub-major, core, contextual and professional studiespar -work experience in the design industry from second year of study

In 2015, the Academy of Design Australia became the 22nd campus in the LCI Education network, allowing students and staff to connect with a 12,000-strong creative network around the globe. ADA offers the opportunity for students to undertake part of their studies abroad.

The ADA campus is centrally located in the vibrant Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. The area is a well-known creative hub, surrounded by art galleries, fashion houses and design studios, which provide many local professional placement opportunities for students. At the start of the 2018 academic year, the Academy will move into an impressively remodelled, heritage-listed building nearby. It features state-of-the-art facilities including an art gallery and film making suites.
