AUSTRALIA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

This qualification is part of the Community Services Training Package. It reflects the role of counsellors, who work with clients on personal and psychological issues using established counselling modalities. They use communication, micro-counselling and interviewing skills and draw on varied counselling therapies to assist clients. At this level, the counsellor will be working in defined and supported counselling roles in established agencies rather than in independent practice.

Establish and confirm the counselling relationship; Facilitate the empowerment of older people; Engage respectfully with young people; Facilitate the interests and rights of clients; Identify and respond to children and young people at risk; Apply learning theories in counselling; Work with diverse people; Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety; Research and apply personality and development theories; Recognise and respond to crisis situations; Support counselling clients in decision-making processes; Assess the needs of clients with problem gambling issues; Provide individualised support; Work with people with mental health issues; Work with forced migrants; Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence; Select and use counselling therapies; Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management; Support independence and wellbeing; Manage and promote diversity; Facilitate the counselling relationship and process; Deliver structured programs; Plan, facilitate and review psycho-educational groups; Support people to improve relationships; Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide; Apply specialist interpersonal and counselling interview skills; Work legally and ethically; Provide counselling for clients with problem gambling issues; Provide loss and grief support; Plan and conduct group activities; Provide brief interventions; Provide suicide bereavement support; Work effectively in child protection to support children, young people and families; Reflect on and improve own professional practice; Work with a child-focused approach; Undertake bicultural work with forced migrants in Australia
