Their knowledge base may be specialised or broad. These individuals are sometimes accountable for group outcomes. Specialisation is possible in Performance, Composition, Sound Production and Music Business.

The Guild is a national organisation conducting courses and examinations in music at all levels, including steps through the grades into Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor Degree. The Guild is classified as a private Registered Training Organisation for VET (TAFE level) courses and as a higher education provider. All courses are on the national register for delivery in all states. FEE-HELP is available for eligible students applying to the Degree (Australian citizens).
