This program is designed to provide graduates with a broad understanding of the community services sector, its practices, principles and theories, and to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to be an effective worker in the field. It offers a strong suite of practical and applied learning subjects, where students will gain real world experience working in and around the community services area. The program aims to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that relate to the field of service delivery within the broad scope of community services. Students will be asked to analyse traditional models of welfare and encouraged to examine a range of contemporary theoretical perspectives. They will develop a wide range of skills and knowledge within their work that is both empowering for clients, rewarding for students and beneficial to organisations. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to form a community of learners to share experiences, develop critical reflective skills and enrich their learning experience. Students will be supported to form strong industry contacts and networks. They will study cultural safety, develop an extensive knowledge related to community services, acquire a multifaceted understanding of applicable legislation and regulation, and will practice and develop decision making and communication strategies. In the final semester, students will undertake an industry project to apply advanced skills and knowledge in an industry workplace with the support of qualified and experienced teaching staff.

Studying with us means that you’ll have access to some of the most state-of-the-art facilities in the country — from our high-tech recording studios to our working restaurant, where chefs Guy Grossi, George Calombaris and Curtis Stone trained. We operate a Nursing Skills Centre of Excellence, the Pets on Elgar veterinary training centre, information technology labs and our $41 million Integrated Technology Hub — the first of its kind. Our Lilydale Lakeside Campus operates a Tech School, an e-learning centre, a business incubator, a childcare centre, conference facilities, and accommodation. Soon it will open an Edutainment Centre.

Other campus facilities include cafeterias, student lounges, childcare services and libraries. We offer a number of student services, including employment assistance, counselling and a disability liaison service, and support for Indigenous students. We also offer specific literacy and numeracy support to provide eligible students with help to complete their course. This support focuses on workplace reading, writing, numeracy (maths) and communication skills. It is flexible and provides support in classrooms and/or in group tutorials, and with online activities.
