Box Hill Institute, TAFE VIC

Type of institution: TAFE Institute
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 02411J

This program will enable students to exercise initiative and professional judgement in the diverse context of biosecurity science. Students will develop skills and knowledge in the plant and animal sciences in combination with an understanding of the social and economic framework surrounding the biosecurity continuum. The program commences with foundation studies in biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology in first year, and introduces students to biosecurity and agriculture through site visits to relevant industries. In second year, students will develop an in depth understanding of how plant and animal production systems work, the pests and diseases that are a threat to these industries and give consideration to human biosecurity including public health and biological warfare. In the final year, the focus will shift to how biosecurity is monitored and maintained. This includes studies in epidemiology, biosecurity risk management and the regulatory frameworks that govern biosecurity in Australia. At the culmination of the program, students will undertake a two-month capstone project to evaluate and report on the biosecurity principles and practices in an industry workplace to demonstrate their skills and knowledge to potential employers.
