This program is designed to enable registered nurses to increase their clinical competence and develop skills in leadership and research. The course is embedded in a strong evidence base and offers students professional and clinical skill development along with the necessary investigative and life-long learning skills. Within the program students can choose to study sequences in selected clinical nursing specialties practice - clinical nursing specialisations include: acute care, cancer, chronic conditions, emergency, intensive care, mental health, orthopaedics, paediatrics, perioperative and renal. The course will integrate the research, ethical, political and reflective skills necessary to enable clinical and professional leadership through an informed position on health-care issues with a specific emphasis on cross-cultural practice. Graduates will have the capacity to undertake leadership roles in a variety of health and educational settings.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must hold current registration as a registered nurse or registered midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). All applicants must have a minimum 0.6 FTE employment in the clinical specialty for which they are applying. Applicants must provide details of their professional responsibilities as part of the online application through SATAC.


This course consists of core units, specialty sequences, and project units. The final project is individually negotiated to allow students to explore in depth an area of professional interest. Both the content and the assessment strategies used in the program ensure that students are able to build on their clinical experience and professional practice. The emphasis of the program is on clinical practice: practice development and clinical leadership. Within each of the sequences students will have the opportunity to enhance their own performance in the work place and initiate projects aimed at practice improvement. Graduates from this program will be recognised as leaders in their chosen field.

Charles Darwin University is the major tertiary education and vocational education and training institution in the Northern Territory.

Originally established as a tertiary institution in 1974, it became the Northern Territory University in 1989 and Charles Darwin University in 2003.

The main University campus is located at Casuarina in Darwin with campuses at Alice Springs, Katherine and Palmerston. VET courses are also offered at Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Yulara Centres as well as at various remote community centres.

The University provides multi-sector education with Senior Secondary, VET, Higher Education and Research facilities.

CDU also deliver a number of courses through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), which is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). The three main sites for delivery will be at the main ACIKE Hub CDU Casuarina campus and at the BIITE campuses at Batchelor and the Alice Springs Desert Peoples' Centre.
