Dr Malcolm Walker Memorial Scholarship
Level of study: Undergraduate / VET
Nationality: Australian and New Zealand
Closing date: Early February
Throughout his illustrious 17 year career at CSU and its predecessor institution Mitchell College of Advanced Education, Mal Walker held noted positions such as, Dean of the School of Social Science and Welfare Studies, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and was appointed to the professoriate. Receiving his PhD in Anthropology from Columbia University, New York, Mal had a great deal of interest in studying how modern institutions like policing impacted on people of third world countries and within Australian Aboriginal communities. Working with both the NSW Police and Department of Community Services he helped to establish programs that dealt with juvenile cautioning, as opposed to court proceedings and programs that allowed Aboriginal people to deal with their own juvenile offenders. A highlight of his time at CSU was his intrinsic involvement in the establishment of the highly regarded Police Management Course. Over the course of his career, Mal worked in a variety of countries sharing his knowledge in roles such as working with the AIDAB police program in Papua New Guinea and working with the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as part of a unit developing the Jayapura University in Irian Jaya. Known for his wry sense of humour, Mal was widely respected by both students and staff.
