This three-year degree has a strong focus on industry projects, giving students the chance to develop a medium-sized software program in their final year. You'll study social and ethical issues such as computer hacking, software piracy and security breaches along with IT fundamentals. You'll also gain skills in project management, project estimation, documentation and report evaluation through the theoretical side of these core subjects. IT studies will include web and software development, IT systems analysis, design, programming and networking. In these classes you'll develop an understanding of infrastructure technology, planning and management and develop ways to understand systems and implement technical programs including e-commerce, data systems and mobile applications. You can combine IT skills with business, social sciences and humanities through elective subjects or refine IT skills further in web engineering, computer technology, security and information systems analysis. You may be selected for La Trobe's Honours program based on academic performance. You may also receive the chance to work part-time for a large-scale organisation during the degree, gaining credit points for work. Scholarships of up to $6000 may be offered by the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

Entry Requirements:

VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Structure:

Students must complete 360 credit points. First year covers IT fundamentals, mathematics, object-oriented programming, web development, and information systems. Second and third-year studies include intermediate object-oriented programming, information systems development, databases, network and information security web development and services, and software and system development.

The Bachelor of Information Technology on the Bendigo and Bundoora (Melbourne) campuses is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Technology may apply for membership with the ACS. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Chisholm is one of the largest providers of education and training in Victoria. The Institute was named in 1998, in honour of Caroline Chisholm, the early Australian reformer and humanitarian. Chisholm's modern campuses in the southeast of Melbourne are at: Dandenong (two locations), Frankston, Berwick, Cranbourne, Mornington Peninsula and Bass Coast as well as two new facilities in the centre of Melbourne. Currently, Chisholm offers over 280 accredited, nationally recognised courses from certificates to bachelor degrees and graduate certificates - including its own degrees and partnership degrees with La Trobe University. It also runs approximately 140 short courses for work skills (industry compliance and skills development), as well as lifestyle (self-improvement, recreation and hobby).
