The Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business is a multidisciplinary qualification designed to enable graduates to gain entry into the legal profession combined with business knowledge and skills. During legal studies, students will learn about legal procedures and key legislation, develop skills necessary to identify, analyse and evaluate facts in relation to legal frameworks. The core areas of the law degree match those required for admission to the legal profession including statutory interpretation, criminal law and procedure, contracts, torts, constitutional law, equity, administrative law, property, company, evidence, professional responsibility and civil procedure. During business studies, students may choose to major in accounting, financial planning, human resource management, management, marketing, property or social innovation. Depending on chosen business major there are a number of professional associations that you may be eligible to apply for.

Standard entry requirements

English (Units 3 & 4, C) or equivalent. English language requirements apply.

Recognition

This course is an approved academic qualification for admission to the legal profession and is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board of Queensland. Marketing major graduates may be eligible for membership with the Australian Marketing Institute and the Australian Market and Social Research Society. Management major graduates may be eligible for membership with the Institute of Managers and Leaders. The Property major is accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API). Graduates are eligible for associate membership and the major is endorsed as supplying the education requirements for certification as a Certified Property Practitioner. Graduates may also seek registration with the Valuers Registration Board. The Human Resource Management major is accredited by the Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI). Graduates will be eligible for membership of AHRI upon successful completion of the course. The Financial Planning major is accredited by the Financial Planning Association (FPA).

Study pathways

Interim Award: Diploma of Business Studies; Bachelor of Laws. Exit Award: Diploma of Business Studies; Bachelor of Laws. Students who achieve a grade point average of 5/7 (75 per cent) in the third level of the Bachelor of Laws program, including a 6 or better level pass in at least one course, may wish to complete the Bachelor of Laws (Honours).

Further information

Graduates are also required to undertake a further period of practical legal training before being admitted as a legal practitioner. Graduates may then be admitted in any Australian jurisdiction.
