Doctoral Degrees prepares students to acquire a systematic and critical understanding of a complex field of learning and specialised research skills to advance learning and/or professional practice corresponding to AQF level 10 qualifications.The Doctor of Education caters for those educators seeking doctoral level studies with a view to becoming leaders in classroom teaching, curriculum development, educational leadership, school improvement, evaluation or school-based professional development. It will also be useful for educators already occupying positions of leadership in a variety of educational or training organisations, who need to upgrade their qualifications. This course targets educators seeking doctoral level study and will simultaneously provide them with advanced in-depth knowledge related to their profession, and involvement in research work which is closely related to the improvement of their professional practice.The course provides high-level inquiry and research skills for senior education professionals, enabling them to evaluate, commission, design, implement and administer research into different aspects of education provision, and to understand the policy implications of such research. The research focus which underpins the Doctor of Education is closely related to the professional world of the students, with a distinctive orientation towards practical research that contributes to the growth of the profession and the discipline itself.

  • It is envisaged that most students entering this program will be in full-time employment and so will pursue their studies part-time. Integration of a student's coursework and research with the needs and directions of their workplace is therefore encouraged. Before being permitted to begin their research component students need to complete candidacy requirements as specified in Curtin Higher Degree regulations. The thesis follows Rule 10: Degree of Doctor by Research. The purpose of the compulsory research proposal preparation unit is to help students develop their proposals prior to application for candidacy. Please note that an oral presentation of the research proposal will be required for all students in completing this compulsory unit.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants for a Doctoral Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards. Applicants require a Master Degree (Research) or Bachelor Honours Degree (first or second class) or a high standard in either a Master Degree (Coursework) or Bachelor Degree with a Graduate Diploma (or equivalent).
