This qualification is part of the Health Training Package. It reflects the role of workers who assist a dentist, dental hygienist, dental prosthetist, dental therapist or oral health therapist during oral health care procedures; which includes maintaining high standards of infection control, assisting with practice administration and supporting quality and professionalism in the dental sector.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must be employed in a dental surgery as a dental assistant and have completed at least 250 hours of practical work in dental assisting.


11 units: 9 core, 2 elective

Subjects you can Study:

Core: Communicate and work in health or community services; Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures; Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures; Assist with dental radiography; Process reusable medical devices and equipment, plus more. Elective: Apply and manage use of basic oral health products; Contribute to effective workplace relationships; Recognise and respond to oral health issues, plus more.

Further information:

Applicants must possess Australian Core Skills Framework levels of at least 2 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication, and numeracy skills to successfully complete this program. Students who do not possess these skills to the level required will be enrolled in additional subjects to build the required skills.

Established in 2001, Dental Assistants Professional Association Inc is a Registered Training Organisation. Its major objective is the education, training and professional status of dental assistants. The Association conducts nationally accredited courses and traineeships in dental assisting, and provides infection control workshops, WHS training, professional development lectures, and an introductory course to dental assisting. The provider also holds an annual dental assistants' conference.
