Biotechnology has important applications in medicine, agriculture and food production. Study core foundation subjects in this laboratory-based degree, including principlesof modern instrumentation, experimental design and data analysis, biochemical and microbiological techniques as well as recombinant DNA technology.

Structure

This program consists of 360 credit points. Students will undertake a mix of theoretical and practical courses, consisting of four 15-credit point courses per semester. Students will complete 19 core courses including, and 5 specialisation elective courses.

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 - Prerequisites Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any English
  • And a study score of at least 20 in one of any Mathematics or any Science
  • ATAR. Non Year 12 - Previous higher education studies with results at a pass level, including any 'single subjects of study', or successful completion of a tertiary preparatory program such as the Federation University Foundation Access Studies Program (FAST)
  • Successful completion of a relevant VET qualification at Certificate III level or higher
  • Applicants who have not completed secondary education, or undertaken any TAFE or university studies should include a personal statement detailing all relevant experience to strengthen their application.Academic IELTS with an Overall score of 6.0
  • With no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.

Study pathways

A science based TAFE Diploma or Certificate IV. The Foundation Access Studies (FAST) Program is an alternative entry method into tertiary studies. Students can progress to a Bachelor of Science (Honours).

Further information

This program is available via Online Learning, in combination with one to two weeks (depending on the program) of compulsory on-campus laboratory sessions. These lab sessions are held in semester one and semester two in each year of the program. Students will also be required to complete examinations either on-campus, or at an approved remote exam location in their region, under supervision. Links with regional industries enable final-year students to participate in directed biotechnological research in an applied research project. Domestic students may apply for the Industry Placement Program (IPP) which offers up to 26 weeks of industry based experience. IPP students receive a scholarship payment of up to $15,000.
