Want to make a positive difference to solve social problems in a rapidly changing human services sector? You'll develop a broad suite of skills to become a social entrepreneur who can assist, advocate and empower people and communities who are experiencing complex social and economic challenges. As a graduate you'll be skilled in areas including organisational management, project and grant writing, advocacy, community work and innovating to solve challenging social problems. You'll develop knowledge and skills of how to become entrepreneurs who can create, propose and have social impact to address complex global challenges through developing innovative and creative solutions. Graduates develop skills working with government and third-sector organisations in case management, community work, group work, ethical practice and managing complex cases.

Structure

This program consists of 360 credit points. Year 1: Key Principle: Orientation to the Profession, Year 2: Key Principle: Developing Professional Identity, Year 3: Key Principle: Becoming a Practitioner. 360 credit points (equivalent to 24 units). Field-based placements are a compulsory component of the program. It provides students with a real-world experience and an opportunity to integrate knowledge of theories and concepts into practice. The program has two field-based placements, one in Year 2 and one in Year 3. Field placement equates to 410 hours and is conducted in a variety of organisations, where you will be able to work on real projects, alongside industry professionals.

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 - Prerequisites Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any English
  • ATAR. Non Year 12 - Previous higher education studies with results at a pass level, including any 'single subjects of study', or successful completion of a tertiary preparatory program such as the Federation University Foundation Access Studies Program (FAST)
  • Successful completion of a relevant VET qualification at Certificate III level or higher
  • Applicants who have not completed secondary education, or undertaken any TAFE or university studies should include a personal statement detailing all relevant experience to strengthen their application.

Recognition

Subject to accreditation by Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA).

Study pathways

Credit will be considered if you have successfully completed relevant higher education or TAFE studies. Advanced standing will be determined on an individual basis, depending on your eligibility for credit transfer, prior experience and qualifications.
