The Bachelor of Information Technology is comprehensive and has an emphasis on the professional skills required to meet the information needs of any modern enterprise. IT at Flinders assumes no background, prior experience or previous computing or mathematical studies. Furthermore, the degree provides scope for students to pursue their own areas of interest. The IT profession offers a broad and diverse range of job opportunities spanning from the highly technical through to very people-oriented. IT skills are transferable anywhere in the world. On completion of this course students will gain marketable and industry relevant skills and knowledge in areas such as internet programming, web-based systems development, software engineering, database systems, computer networks and professional enterprise including self-management, communication and interpersonal skills.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent qualifications; or mature age entry (STAT); or TAFE/VET qualifications; or higher education transfers; or completion of a foundation studies program

Structure:

In addition to core computer science and IT topics, this course provides for study in industry relevant areas such as professional skills and project management. Instruction in internet-based areas of application is a feature of the program. In the later years students can specialise in particular areas of interest and undertake project work relevant to industry. Students complete studies in areas such as programming, databases, application development, interactive computer systems and software engineering. There is also room in the degree for students to undertake elective topics of their choice. An Information Technology practicum is available in this course which comprises a significant period of work experience.

Students can combine this degree with any other bachelor degree within the College of Science and Engineering, subject to meeting entry requirements.

Recognition:

This degree is accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the professional level. Courses accredited at this level by the Australian Computer Society are recognised internationally under the Seoul Accord.

In 2020 Flinders Train Station will open, connecting Flinders’ main campus to Tonsley. The adjacent Flinders Village development has commenced, to add further research facilities and student accommodation amid shops and other amenities in a thriving urban centre.

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered for some 26,000 students. Flinders’ 5,400 international students come from more than 90 countries, with main campus featuring onsite accommodation for 560 students and an international pathways centre.
