Coasts and Oceans is available as a specialisation within Flinders' Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Honours) degrees. Flinders' science degrees are flexible and permit students to move between degrees and specialisations easily. This degree provides an understanding of a variety of coastal, marine and ocean systems. It examines the physical processes shaping coastal and marine environments as well investigating a variety of management and policy interventions undertaken to sustain them.
Structure
- First year consists of core (compulsory) topics that focus on fundamental areas of environmental studies and form the basis of second and third year specialty topics in areas such as environmental management and impact assessment
- coastal environments, maritime archaeology, conservation biology and restoration ecology or fluid modelling and mechanics. Students will have the opportunity to participate in project work, field exercises, and investigate practical, real-world challenges. There is also scope for interdisciplinary studies which combine this area with topics in biology, hydrology or maths, to broaden employment possibilities which include coastal programmes officer, consultant, oceanographic officer, tidal analysis assistant and scientist.
