Bachelor of Arts / Master of Teaching (Early Childhood)- 5 year double degree

This double degree is designed to prepare early childhood educators (birth to age 8) and offer high achieving students additional challenging material to enable them to maximise their intellectual growth and potential. Students will be provided with the background and skills necessary to enter the early childhood education profession with confidence and competence. Students will gain knowledge of selected Bachelor of Arts topics, curriculum studies and theories of education and undertake professional practice which brings together theory and practice in early childhood settings (e.g. childcare centres, kindergartens, pre-school and year levels Reception to Year 2).

Structure

In years one to three students will complete a major and a minor sequence offered in the Bachelor of Arts. Students will also study education topics which include education studies, curriculum studies and early childhood studies necessary for teaching, and undertake professional practice in early childhood settings. Students are required to pass all topics of the Bachelor component of the double degree and achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.0 (Credit average) in order to progress to the Masters component of the degree. Students who do not pass all topics and/or who fail to achieve the minimum GPA will transfer either to the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)/Bachelor of Arts double degree.

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

Recognition

Upon successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions. Graduates meet Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority employment criteria.

Further information

All School of Education pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will therefore not able to complete the requirements of the course. The process is managed by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Screening and Licensing Branch. In addition, students must complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to commencing the professional experience topics.
