Bachelor of Education - Primary R-7 and Special Education / Bachelor of Disability Studies

This double degree prepares you to combine in-depth study of the general primary curriculum with studies in Special Education and Disability. The course aims to support students to become effective teachers of students in the primary years (Reception to Year 7) including those with disabilities, learning or behavioural difficulties.

Structure

Students will receive the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary to become a primary school teacher. In addition, the degree will also prepare students for a range of professional roles related to supporting children with disabilities and their families within the broader community through disability professions. The degree will incorporate topics across the areas of general education studies, primary curriculum studies, special education and disability studies. The degree is available in internal (on campus) mode only and part-time students should note that most classes are held during the day. The degree includes the required block professional experience placements.

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

Recognition

Upon successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions. Graduates meet Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority employment criteria. Completing the disability studies double degree makes you eligible to register as a developmental educator with Developmental Educators Australia Inc (DEAI).

Further information

All School of Education pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening letter before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will not be able to complete the requirements of the course. The process is managed by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Screening and Licensing Branch. In addition to the above, students must meet the required benchmark in the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to commencing the professional experience topics.
