This Bachelor of Law and Society is designed to give the intellectual tools to understand, conduct research into and evaluate the relationship between law and society. The degree develops an understanding of how the law operates as a social institution, including its institutional structure, the role of key legal personnel, and the process of law reform. The degree demonstrates how the law is shaped by and shapes social context, including how law is constituted by (and constitutes) relations of power and normative understandings.

Structure

Students complete core (compulsory) topics in Legal Studies, Criminology, Philosophy and Sociology. Students will also complete one of the following streams: Economy and Society, International and Human Rights and Culture and Society. These will help them refine and strengthen a diverse range of skills required in the constantly changing employment market. Areas of study have been carefully selected to ensure students develop a sound understanding of the workings of the Australian legal system and the way it impacts on society in the areas of family, culture, gender, the world of work and business. Students will learn to locate, read and analyse legal materials as well as conduct research and examine possible reforms in relation to contemporary justice issues. Students will develop a sound theoretical understanding of justice, rights, power and responsibility in relation to law and policy development.

Students have the option of combining this degree with one of the following Bachelor degrees, providing they meet the entry requirements for both: Laws and Legal Practice, Laws and Legal Practice (Honours), Criminology, Criminology (Honours) and International Relations.
