Materials give products their functional and aesthetic properties. Materials Engineers research, design and develop specifications of materials to create products or investigate their properties with the consideration that they must also be economically viable and maintain safety and environmental standards. They should have knowledge of the properties and behaviours of substances from raw materials to finished products. This degree is designed to provide significant and substantial advanced knowledge of and skills in the field of Materials Engineering, obtained through a combination of coursework and research study.

Structure

  • This is a 72 unit program where students complete six core (compulsory) topics
  • either a research project or thesis
  • and option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, particularly in research and development
  • preparing them for further study or for a career as materials engineer, quality testing engineer or process engineer.

Standard entry requirements

  • Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline such as engineering, engineering technology, engineering science or an equivalent qualification
  • Or hold the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Science (Materials stream) from Flinders University or equivalent qualification. All applicants must have achieved a Flinders equivalent grade point average (GPA) of 5.00 or above in one of the above courses.

Study pathways

Students who have completed a relevant Washington Accord accredited Bachelor of Engineering with honours or have passed the same topics in a Flinders University Master of Engineering Science may receive up to 36 units of credit towards the Master of Engineering degree.
