This graduate certificate is for health professionals from any related background who are working in or have an interest in palliative care. It aims to provide an opportunity to deepen the knowledge base on which their practice is based and to build a better understanding of the strengths contributed by each member.

Structure

18 units. Students complete two core (compulsory) topics and two option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students with the opportunity to critically appraise palliative care theory, research and professional literature to integrate their learning into practice by identifying the issues related to the person with a life-limiting illness to meet the specific needs of the individual, their families and those involved in their care.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in dietetics, medicine, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy, paramedic science, pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech pathology or social work, and must have a minimum of one year full-time equivalent professional experience in the health sector or closely related field by the commencement date of the course. Applicants who do not hold a bachelor level or equivalent degree and are registered nurses in Australia will be required to undertake a bridging course before commencing the course https://www.flinders.edu.au/engage/community/short-courses/palliative-care-nursing. The commencement date for the bridging course is flexible, however applicants are advised to enrol in it at least 4 months prior to the commencement of the Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care.
