This degree focuses on the study of food in relation to health and illness. Nutrition examines the role of food and nutrients in the metabolic and physiological processes of the body and Dietetics is concerned with the prevention and treatment of a variety of food-related diseases. Dietitians/nutritionists interpret scientific knowledge about food in relation to health and translate it into practical information to help individuals and communities change their eating habits and improve health.Applications are encouraged from people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Some scholarship support may be available.

Structure

Students choose between a Coursework or Research pathway. Students completing the Coursework pathway complete eight core (compulsory) topics and four option topics selected from a range of option topics available. Students completing the Research pathway complete eleven core (compulsory) topics including a research project. Topics completed in both pathways aim to provide students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to allow them as graduates to practise in a range of settings including hospital, public health and community settings and research establishments.The second year of the course includes supervised training placements in hospital, public health and community settings. Some professional practice placements may be required to be taken outside the usual semester periods and outside of metropolitan Adelaide. Interesting and diverse placement experiences are available in a range of rural, remote and interstate health settings. Standard entry requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and have achieved a Flinders equivalent grade point average (GPA) of credit (5.00) or above to be considered.Applicants who did not achieve the minimum GPA in their completed bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, can also be considered on the basis of a second bachelor degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma or Masters degree of their choice, provided they have completed a minimum one semester full-time equivalent study in one of these courses and that the Flinders equivalent GPA is 5.00 or above in this study.Applicants must also have completed:At least the equivalent of 13.5 Flinders units (0.375 EFTSL) across the course of their undergraduate program in human nutrition and food science topics in the areas of basic nutrition principles, life-cycle nutrition and food scienceAt least the equivalent of 18 Flinders units (0.5 EFTSL) of introductory bioscience topics studied at first year level, including at least 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) of human biology and 4.5 Flinders units (0.125 EFTSL) of chemistryAt least the equivalent of 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) in human biochemistry topics studied at second year undergraduate levelAt least the equivalent of 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) in human physiology topics studied at second year undergraduate levelSelection is based on academic merit.Before they are permitted to commence professional experience placement in South Australia or interstate, all students are required to have either a current letter of clearance from the South Australian Department for Communities and Social Inclusion indicating that they have had a national criminal history assessment, or a National Police Certificate. These assessments provide a summary of an individual's national criminal history. All public health venues in South Australia now require a national criminal history assessment to be obtained through processes set up by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion. These processes may take some time and so you are strongly advised to apply as early as possible before your professional experience placement.Students must also comply with the Immunisation Guidelines for Health Care Workers to be able to undertake professional practice placements.
