Gordon Institute of TAFE

A Geelong icon and one of the largest regional TAFEs in Victoria, The Gordon has been helping people gain real skills for real jobs for 130 years. We pride ourselves on delivering a great range of ‘hands-on’ training courses that provide real outcomes to our students. Gordon graduates achieve better employment outcomes than the state and national averages.

Real skills. Real experience. Real outcomes.

Located in Geelong, gateway to spectacular surf beaches and a fantastic lifestyle, it's not surprising our student satisfaction rating is also higher than the state and national averages.

Students can choose from hundreds of nationally accredited qualifications across apprenticeships, traineeships, certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas. Most courses include work placement and Gordon teachers are industry experts, meaning students gain real experience not just classroom theory.

The Gordon embraces the partnership model; working closely with several universities to offer graduates credit options and guaranteed pathways to university.

From Geelong, Victoria, around Australia and overseas, thousands choose to study with us each year.

The Gordon provides:

  • Job ready skills and qualifications
  • Affordable student residence
  • Guaranteed pathways to Deakin University and Victoria University
  • Student services and scholarships

Apprenticeship & Traineeship

The Gordon’s Apprenticeships and Traineeships are a great way to combine employment and training, and lead to a nationally recognised qualification.

An apprenticeship offers the following cutting-edge advantages:

  • A head start in your chosen career
  • Paid work and structured training that can be on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both
  • Recognise existing skills and prior experience and hence reduce formal training time
  • Available part-time or full-time
  • Can also be combined with school education
  • Nationally recognised qualifications and skills
  • Provide a pathway from school to work.

The Gordon works with employers, apprentices and trainees to create an Individual Training Plan that is customized as required.

Why choose The Gordon?

Hands-on training: real skills for real jobs
The Gordon specialises in providing a hands-on training environment where you learn by ‘doing’; your new knowledge and skills are put into practice in either simulated or real-life situations. Training areas are designed to replicate industry environments, so when you’re learning you also experience what it will be like to do the work in the ‘real’ world.

Industry trained teachers
Our teachers aren’t just teachers. They are also professionals who have excelled in their careers, learned from experience, and are still in constant contact with their industry. Many of them still work in their field whilst teaching at The Gordon.

Known and trusted by employers
There is no doubt that The Gordon name opens doors to prospective employers. Local employers and the Greater Geelong community have trusted our training capability for more than a century, and we’re continuing to build this trust state-wide, nationally and internationally.

Work placements and industry projects
As well as learning in our practical facilities, most of our courses also include work placement opportunities with real employers, which not only gives you experience but also a foot-in-the-door for possible employment after your studies. We also have great relationships with hundreds of businesses in the wider Geelong region, and we work closely with them to give students real industry projects as part of their courses.

Location, Location, Location
The Gordon has campuses located in Geelong, East Geelong, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing as well as a small trade based campus in Colac. The Gordon employs approximately 650 staff in teaching and non-teaching areas.

Name: Kate Elstone

Course: Certificate III in Cabinet Making

"I chose cabinet making as a career as I enjoyed woodwork during my school years. The Gordon taught me about hard work and the benefits that come with putting in that little bit extra, and I've been given the opportunity to travel around Australia and overseas to compete in national and international competitions.

The teachers are passionate about what they teach, and have played a big role in what I was able to achieve throughout my apprenticeship. I am a hands-on learner and love having a product at the end of learning a skill to show what I am capable of creating. Being paid while on the job was a hands-down winner, as I’ve gained a qualification without having to spread myself thin to make a living.

My career goal is to own my own business, specialising in custom pieces of wooden furniture and homewares."
