The Master of Arts (Theology) is a qualification at Level 9. It enables students to acquire an advanced body of knowledge related to theology. The Master of Arts (Theology) offers a coursework option and a research thesis option. The coursework option consists of twelve subjects. It qualifies students to engage in professional work in this field at a higher management level. It also serves as a basis for engaging in further scholarly activity. The research thesis option consists of four subjects studied at Level 9 followed by a research thesis of 30,000 words. This qualifies students to engage in other scholarly or professional work in this field. The Master of Arts (Theology) by Coursework consists of 12 subjects, a total of 36 Credit points organised into the following specialisation streams: Marriage and Family; Bioethics, Theology and Medical Practice; Religious Education and Catholic School Leadership; Evangelisation of Culture; and Art, Liturgy and Culture.

Structure

The Master of Arts (Theology) degree by coursework will consist of twelve subjects with a Level 9 code. Students may opt to study for a general qualification in which they can select any twelve subjects with a Level 9 code including one capstone subject. For specialisation, six subjects will be required from the designated specialisation stream and another five subjects can be taken from any of the other specialisation streams with a Level 9 code. The final subject must be a capstone subject. For a double specialisation at this level, the remaining elective and capstone/thesis subjects must be taken from the designated area of specialisation.

Standard entry requirements

Students who have completed a Bachelor of Theology degree at Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in theology, religious education, bioethics, philosophy or other related disciplines may articulate directly into the Master of Arts (Theology). Students who have no qualifications in theology will be required to complete a Graduate Certificate of Theological Studies or an equivalent Level 8 qualification in theology, religious education, bioethics or other recognised related discipline before articulating into the Master of Arts (Theology).

Study pathways

A Master of Arts (Theology) candidate who chooses to withdraw after attaining at least a passing grade in four subjects can be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies qualification. A Master of Arts (Theology) by research graduate can articulate into a PhD program by submitting the research thesis completed for this subject as part of the admission requirements. A Master of Arts (Theology) by coursework graduate who selects the thesis conversion option (either 12,000 words in place of two elective subjects or 18,000 words and a subject designated for the preparation of a proposal in place of four subjects) may submit this thesis as part of the admission requirements for a PhD program at the Institute.
