This combined degree prepares students to work as a dietitian through both theoretical knowledge and professional experience. You with the skills to work in a diverse range of areas, from counselling patients to developing food products to optimising sports performance. First year includes a range of health and human bioscience subjects as well as chemistry and food fundamentals, paired with an elective in a student's area of interest. In second year, you'll deepen your scientific knowledge through subjects in biochemistry, nutrition and disease, physiology, and how food functions in society. In the final two years you'll apply your knowledge in practical settings through more than 100 days of professional placement. This comprises 60 days in medical nutrition therapy (managing individual cases), 25 days of community or public health nutrition and 25 days of food service management. You'll study with staff who are paving the way in dietetics and nutrition research. They include Associate Professor Catherine Itsiopoulos, a renowned researcher in the area of Mediterranean diet for metabolic health, and Dr Sue Shepherd, one of the world's leading experts in gastrointestinal nutrition and the founder of the Low FODMAP Diet, which has revolutionised the management of irritable bowel syndrome. The course structure lets students complete the required subjects for this four-and-a-half year degree in only four years.

Structure

In first year, students take core subjects with students from other health sciences courses, but with a chemistry subject in first semester and a dietetics-specific subject in second semester. In second year, students further develop their physiology and biochemistry knowledge, and skills in food science and nutrition. In third and fourth years, students learn practical skills in dietetic management of health and disease using case-based learning techniques. Students also undertake around three months of professional practice placements, including individual dietetic case management, community nutrition and food service management.

Standard entry requirements

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL
  • And a study score of at least 25 in two of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics
  • International students must meet the academic and English language requirements
  • National Police Check
  • Working with Children Check

Recognition

The Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Dietetic Practice has provisional accreditation from the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Dietetic Practice may apply for membership with the DAA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
