Structure

Students must complete a total of 480 Credit Points to graduate from this course and be eligible to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). To be eligible to graduate students must complete supervised teaching practicum (80 days) as indicated in the course structure. All applicants completing an initial teacher education course must sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Teachers (LANTITE) prior to completing their course and before graduating.

Standard entry requirements

VCE Units 3 and 4: minimum study score of 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. VCE Units 1 and 2 (not Foundation) or VCE Units 3 and 4 Mathematics (any). All applicants must complete the CASPer test to support selection into teaching programs. CASPer is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Further information

Applicants are required to obtain a Working With Children Check prior to their first placement. As a result of new professional standards, all students will be required to complete an externally administered Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduation in order to be eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Students have the opportunity for diagnostic tests and support during their studies to ensure they are at an appropriate standard prior to sitting the formal test.
