This five-year, full-time dentistry course covers the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the mouth including teeth and supporting structures. The course introduces clinical experience from the start, and offers a focus on rural health needs. You'll study human biosciences, public health, dental science and research, and all aspects of oral health practice. You'll explore the differences between rural and urban health and how these relate to health policy and rural health services. In fourth year, You'll study prosthodontics - prosthetics for the jaw and teeth including crowns, bridges, implants and dentures. In fifth year, you'll learn more about specialist disciplines including comprehensive patient care, and aspects of law, ethics and dental practice management. From first year, You'll work in La Trobe's clinical simulation lab. You'll gain direct experience in public clinics from third year with a placement in Bendigo. During fourth and fifth years, you'll undertake clinical placements in Melton, Wodonga, Mildura and Bendigo. You'll treat patients under the supervision of experienced clinicians and participate in community-based oral health promotion programs. Before starting this degree, you'll need to comply with requirements set by the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) and La Trobe's Department of Dentistry and Oral Health, which include Level 1 First Aid / CPR certification, a police check, vaccination and a Working With Children Check. La Trobe University offers grants for disadvantaged students to offset the costs of equipment and clothing, along with optional accommodation packages for students on rural clinical placement.

Structure

The first two years of the Bachelor program focus on biosciences, public health, general medicine, materials science, growth and development, and preclinical dental procedures. The third year covers more advanced preclinical procedures and introduces students to the clinical environment, as well as continuing studies in research methods, oral pathology and pharmacology. The Master of Dentistry provides places in clinical facilities around regional Victoria with integrated didactic and clinical teaching.

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 35 in any English
  • And a study score of at least 25 in Biology
  • And a study score of at least 25 in Chemistry. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Health Sciences in Dentistry / Master of Dentistry is accredited by the Australian Dental Council. Graduates of the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Dentistry / Master of Dentistry may be eligible to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia. Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Further information

Students will be required to relocate to various clinical facilities around Victoria as part of their clinical placement. Deferrals are not available for commencing dentistry students. Please note that students are responsible for accommodation costs whilst on clinical placement. This course has a clinical component. Students can study this course through La Trobe's Regional Reward. This course has limited opportunities for entry with advanced standing. Applicants may apply for entry including previous tertiary study, but offers may not include advanced standing for all previous subjects.
