Envision a career in orthoptics. We can help you get there. Join Australia's only undergraduate orthoptics program and learn to detect, diagnose and manage eye conditions in a range of patients, including children and adults. With a strong focus on clinical experience, our Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours) will prepare you to launch a successful career as an orthoptist. You'll explore the anatomy and physiology of the eye to understand vision and visual function. Learn how to help people with eye disorders including strabismus (eye turns), eye diseases and low vision. Clinical experiences start in your first year and will be a significant part of your degree. We work closely with industry to give you access to placements and hands-on experience in hospitals with dedicated eye clinics as well as private eye clinics.
Structure
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours) students must complete 480 credit points consisting of: 420 core credit points 60 core-choice credit points
Standard entry requirements
- Recent secondary education - VTAC prerequisite: Year 12 English prerequisite (25) - Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.
- Recent secondary education - VTAC prerequisite: Year 12 subject prerequisite - Other - Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in two of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.
- International: IELTS - 6.5 < 6.0 (PG minimum) - 6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Recognition
Our new course, the Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours), will be seeking accreditation with the Australian Orthoptic Board (AOB). Pending the outcome of the processes, graduates of the Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours) may be eligible to apply for registration with the Australian Orthoptic Board. Please contact the relevant professional body for details. Graduates of the Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours) may be eligible to apply for membership with Orthoptics Australia, the International Orthoptic Association, and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
