Combine business studies with event management and marketing knowledge, gaining the skills to promote, organise and manage events. The first year of this course introduces students to a range of essential business disciplines such as accounting, economics and finance. Students can take an introductory events management subject along with an introductory marketing subject. Through the event management major, a student develops the skills to plan and organise festivals and community events, as well as develop knowledge of sustainability in event planning and management. The university places a particular focus on developing entrepreneurship skills, which are vital for the promotion and success of professional, sporting, cultural and community events. Through a marketing major students learn how to define and communicate effective marketing strategies and gain an understanding of brands and brand management, advertising and sales promotion. Students also gain the market research skills necessary to find opportunities for successful events. The unique industry Professors of Practice at La Trobe work within this course to improve course curriculum, student learning experience, and engage with industry and business.

Structure

Students must complete at least 360 credit points. At least 330 of these must be in subjects offered by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. In first year students take four business foundation subjects, two subjects specific to the event management disciplinary core, one subject specific to the marketing core and one elective subject. The four business foundation subjects, Business Foundations, Accounting and Finance for Business, Business Economics, and Business Analytics, will introduce them to key business disciplines and work-ready skills. These skills will be further enhanced in second and third year when they take a subject in Sustainability and a capstone subject in Entrepreneurship, respectively. In addition to these common core subjects students will complete eight core subjects in event management and eight core subjects in marketing over the three years of the degree.

Standard entry requirements

VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

Graduates of the Bachelor of Business (Event Management/Marketing) may apply for membership with Meetings and Events Australia. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
