Master of Communication - Journalism Innovation

This program is designed to help aspiring and mid-career journalists and communication practitioners develop insights and responses to the contemporary media industry. The focus is on enhancing journalistic practice whilst developing business, marketing, project management and software design skills. It offers choices in cutting edge coursework subjects, as well as research project options that can provide an opportunity to progress to a higher research degree.

Entry Requirements:

Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum 60 per cent average; Prior learning developed through relevant work experience or professional accreditation, where it is deemed to be at least equivalent to that obtained through a Bachelor degree, may be considered; In making an offer to an applicant, the University will give consideration to a range of factors to determine whether an applicant has demonstrated the capacity to work at a Masters level, including academic record, English proficiency, and/or employment experience; The Bachelor degree (or equivalent) must be deemed cognate and marks reflective of the capacity to work at the Masters level to gain entry to a 1.5-year Master's degree, otherwise, the applicant will be considered for a 2-year Master degree program, which involves initial entry into a fully upgradeable Diploma entry pathway; NB: Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place.


Students must complete 240 credit points; Students with a cognate undergraduate degree and/or significant and relevant work history may be considered for advanced standing.

La Trobe encourages students to participate in overseas study programs including nursing in Nepal, nanotechnology in Tokyo, and Indigenous studies in the Philippines. In 2016, La Trobe awarded travel grants and scholarships to 950 undergraduate and postgraduate students to study with partners like National University of Singapore, San Diego State University and Stockholm University.
