This program provides training in the software technologies required by Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professionals to design, program, manage, maintain and enhance computer systems, particularly knowledge-based systems. Upon completion graduates should possess research skills gained from their independent research project; an appreciation of the pertinent social, legal and ethical issues faced by today's computing professionals; and an ability to lead and engage in lifelong learning.

Structure

Students can specialise in computer networks and software engineering streams by choosing appropriate subjects. Specialised subjects include Intelligent Computing Systems, Co-Operating Computer Systems, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Games Programming, Databases, Network Engineering, Software Engineering and Software Systems, and Web Development. Students also collaborate with a small team to plan and develop an industry-focused software or IT project.

Standard entry requirements

  • Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in computer science with a minimum Weighted Mark Average (WAM) 65% (or its equivalent as based on the level of standard assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition) in their previous qualification
  • Applicants who have successfully completed a four-year engineering Australian bachelor degree with a substantial computer science content, equivalent to a three-year computer science degree with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) 65% (or its equivalent as based on the level of standard assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition) in their previous qualification may also be considered
  • International students must meet the relevant academic and English language requirements
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Study pathways

Students may receive the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science after completing the first year of the course only if they decide not to proceed to the second year. If students have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science or an Honours degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent, they may be eligible Advanced Standing (credit) for some subjects.
