This program is designed for professionals currently working in health and development settings and seeking a career in policy fields or program/project management work in international health environments; and for professionals working in development settings who require training in public health. The Master of Public Health component is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of public health theory and practice, as set out in the Foundation Competencies for Master of Public Health Graduates in Australia. Graduates are equipped with unique knowledge, skills and perspectives (in public health practice, global health, and political science and international development) essential for working effectively in international contexts.

Structure

315 credit points from both degrees, including the core subjects Epidemiology and Demography, Introduction to Biostatistics, and Evidence-Based Public Health. Other core subjects cover approaches to development, sociology, social change, environmental health and international health policy, and examine Australia's role in the international health arena.

Standard entry requirements

  • To be eligible for entry, students will normally have completed an undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline and have at least two years' experience in a health or health-related field
  • Applicants will need to have a minimum grade average of 70 per cent for previous qualifications to be considered for the double degree
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place
  • Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Further information

Placements are sometimes arranged as a part of the program, and interaction with appropriate NGOs and government agencies occurs during the teaching program. All students must complete a minor thesis or project based in an appropriate setting.
