Master of Sports Physiotherapy / Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

This program provides graduate physiotherapists with opportunities to develop advanced clinical and practical skills in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and sports physiotherapy.

Structure

Students can begin their studies in either degree. The first Masters course requires completion of 120 credit points of study, of which the first 60 credit points comprise the subjects included in the graduate certificate of the same name. The remaining 60 credit points are gained by the completion of two subjects from the other Masters degree that teach advanced clinical practice as well as expert clinical reasoning, manual therapy and exercise prescription within an evidence-based practice framework. The second degree in the sequence requires the student to undertake 75 credit points of study. The double degree has a total of 195 credit points.

Standard entry requirements

  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • Full current Australian physiotherapy registration
  • Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy with at least a B-grade course weighted average mean and at least two years of clinical experience in the musculoskeletal field
  • Or Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy with at least a B-grade course weighted average mean and at least three years of clinical experience in sports physiotherapy
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place
  • Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

Graduates of the Master of Sports Physiotherpay/Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy may apply for membership and the titles of APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and APA Sports Physiotherapist with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). Membership and titling may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant body for details.

Study pathways

Advanced standing is available to those with a La Trobe Master's degree in either sports or musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Further information

Semester starts in summer (February). Apply for the Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal or Sports Physiotherapy program initially as these courses forms year one of this Master's program. The graduate certificate stream determines which Master's program you will complete first. Students must complete the two-week University-based subject Clinical Reasoning for Physiotherapists (PTY5CRP Study Period - Summer 3, held in the first two weeks of February) before commencing any of the clinical placement subjects: PTY5APS Advanced Practice in Sports Physiotherapy andPTY5AMP: Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Practice. The Master of Sports Physiotherapy requires the successful completion of the APA Level 3 Sports Course for the subject PTY5ASP. It is the student's responsibility to apply and be accepted into the Level 3 course by meeting the minimum criteria.
