Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine

Monash University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00008C

The MD course is an interdisciplinary course, combining biomedical sciences and clinical skills training. The course is thematic and places emphasis on clinical communication skills, with clinical contact visits to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals commencing in the first year. Students are also required to spend time in rural areas as part of a health care team. Teaching hospitals affiliated with Monash University as well as other hospitals and clinics within the metropolitan and country areas are used during clinical training. Once students commence the clinical component of the MD, they will experience the additional benefits of longitudinal education in one of Monash's many clinical schools. These home bases will allow students to embed within their clinical school and the affiliated health services for an extended period of time providing them with the opportunity to form ongoing relationships with clinical supervisors and to develop scholarly research projects that will support better care of patients in that setting.

Structure

The 5 year curriculum incorporates 4 themes into which interdisciplinary units are taught. Early in the course basic medical and behavioural sciences are introduced and emphasis is placed on clinical issues through clinical case studies. In later years, clinical training is obtained at teaching hospitals.
