This unique course is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and unites experts from Monash University’s Department of Forensic Medicine and Faculty of Law, along with leading Australian experts in their fields.For medical professionals, the course provides insights into the legal frameworks underpinning the coronial and justice systems and the role of medical evidence in that context. For legal experts engaging in coronial or criminal law, or in medical malpractice, the course provides an understanding of forensic technologies, their roles and limitations

Structure

Part A. Introductory legal knowledgeThese studies enable you to gain fundamental knowledge of legal principles and concepts, and develop core skills in legal research and writing.Part B. Introductory forensics knowledgeThese studies will enable you to develop an understanding and the skills of four key areas required for high quality forensic medical and scientific service and will apply to medical practitioners, dentists and biomedical medical scientists and radiographers: medical evidence, injury interpretation, elements of forensic science and ethics, medicine and the law.In particular, you will gain practical skills and knowledge of the legal and procedural rules and administrative arrangements for the presentation of evidence to courts and tribunals within the justice system. You will also learn about the interpretation of injuries, including the pathophysiology of injuries and injury classification and documentation. You will become familiar with the tools and vocabulary of ethical discourse in forensic medicine and science. You will learn how the broader forensic science disciplines interact with your own area in the performance of case work, including rules of evidence collection and preservation and chain of custody for forensic samples.Part C. Extending specialist legal knowledgeThese studies will provide you with in-depth knowledge of a wide range of areas in your chosen specialisation. You will be able to focus on sources of information relevant to your specialisation and the application of research methods and specialist discipline knowledge and skills necessary to support law-related work in the field.Part D. Extending specialist forensics knowledgeThe studies enable you to develop specialised knowledge and advanced skills in areas of forensic medicine that suit your interests, skills and career goals. You will gain in-depth knowledge of a range of key areas within either forensic medicine, forensic dentistry or forensic science. Depending on your interests and motivation, you have the option to apply and consolidate the knowledge and professional skills gained by completing a supervised research project.

Standard entry requirements

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline (including medicine, nursing, psychology, criminology, law, humanities, arts or social sciences related discipline) with at least a pass (50%) average.
