Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade

This qualification is part of the Metal and Engineering Training Package. It is for people employed as apprentice mechanical fitters and machinists in the manufacturing, engineering and related industry areas. Students will gain the competencies required to work as a mechanical tradesperson in these areas. Students will acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures, systems and planning, engineering measurement, computations and computer technology plus some industry-specific skills in mechanical fitting and machining that are relevant to their current or intended employment.

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal educational requirements for this course, however students would normally be expected to be in, or seeking relevant employment in the Metal and Engineering Industry.

Structure:

11 core units; plus Mechanical Trade stream units and electives to the value of at least 76 points

Core: Perform engineering measurements; Perform computations; Apply principles of occupational health and safety in the work environment; Plan to undertake a routine task; Plan a complete activity; Apply quality procedures; Apply quality systems; Organise and communicate information; Work with others in a manufacturing, engineering or related environment; Interact with computing technology; Assist in the provision of on the job training. Stream: Perform tool and cutter grinding operations; Perform complex milling operations; Interpret technical drawing; Enter and change programmable controller operational parameters; Perform precision mechanical measurement; Perform gland packing; Maintain pneumatic systems; Diagnose and rectify low voltage electrical systems; plus more. Electives: Apply fabrication, forming and shaping techniques; Perform routine manual metal arc welding; Carry out heat treatment; Interpret and produce curved 3-dimensional shapes; Install pipework and pipework assemblies; Operate mobile load shifting equipment; plus more.

Study Pathways:

Graduates may be eligible to enrol in other courses in the Metal and Engineering Training Package MEM05.
