This program prepares students to become a specialist in the education and development of children from birth to eight years. Graduates can work in leadership roles in early childhood settings and up to the lower three years of primary school, including prep.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent; Prerequisites: English (4,SA) and Maths A, B or C (4,SA) and at least one of Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Marine Science, Marine Studies, Physics or Science 21 (4,SA). Applicants must submit a statement addressing suitability criteria.

Structure:

The 384 credit point course consists of teaching and learning studies, early childhood curriculum studies covering all of the key learning areas, and professional experience units where students will undertake practical supervised professional experience in a range of early childhood settings.

Study Pathways:

Students admitted with a completed Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, or an Advanced Diploma of Children's Services, or an equivalent accredited qualification, will be granted advanced standing (credit) of 96 credit points. Those who have the Diploma, or equivalent, plus relevant early childhood work experience will receive 144 credit points of advanced standing and will complete the course in five years part-time and externally. Students may be able to apply for advanced standing for other previous study.

QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. Applicants who receive an OP 1-5 or equivalent, and meet the course prerequisites are guaranteed an offer for this course in the major offer round. Students will need to be issued with a blue card prior to having contact with children as part of this course. Successful completion of the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students is a graduation requirement.

Recognition:

The course is currently being considered for further accreditation with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) and the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.
