In this program, students undertake a range of units to equip them as professional social workers. They can undertake specialist units in child and family services, aged services, disability services, or services to young people. Other units cover areas such as mental health, legal and ethical aspects of practice, Indigenous perspectives, and dealing with complexity. Students may also choose a distinctive study pathway such as child protection, international social work practice or research.

Students may apply to transfer to a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the end of second year. Entry to Honours will be competitive and will be based on Grade Point Average. Students may be able to claim credit for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes.

Current Blue Card and Hepatitis B vaccination prior to commencing the placement components in this course. Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement. Hepatitis A, Influenza and Poliomyelitis are highly recommended for all Health students. QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. Applicants who receive an OP 1-5 or equivalent are guaranteed an offer for this course in the major offer round.

Recognition:

Graduates of this course are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) as a social worker.
