The media industries of the 21st century are a field of rapid change that produces local/global socioeconomic and cultural impact. All aspects of daily life, including workplaces, are influenced by media, in terms of both broad application and functionality. Part of this change is the increasing emphasis on the reach and power of social media. This course will provide students with sophisticated, transferable media and communication skills. Students will value the breadth and specifics of media, and that it includes television, radio, print, the Internet, mobile technologies, movies, advertising, public relations, music, media research and media policy. Authentic learning opportunities such as industry placements and projects complement the theoretical course content and give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills. Students will understand how the media works, its impacts on society, and the issues which shape public debate and concerns about the media. Students will understand the practicalities of the media industry, including the jobs which exist and those that will become part of the media landscape in the near future.

Pathways to Master of Teaching (Secondary) and Master of Philosophy are available. Students may be able to claim advanced standing for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes.
