This double degree increases career options across communication and law fields. The communication component prepares students for professional roles in the rapidly evolving communication industries. Students gain exposure to a broad range of communication literacies and local and international communication platforms. Students will understand the importance of cultural diversity, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, in national and globalised communications environments. The Laws (Honours) degree prepares students to think ahead and take advantage of employment opportunities in growth areas and newly emerging sectors, such as intellectual property and technology. The degree provides a strong foundation in contemporary law knowledge and transferable skills such as critical analysis, problem solving and research that will equip students for their careers. Graduates benefit from meaningful connections with high profile industry employers and classes with leading and internationally renowned law experts. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and international exchanges provide opportunities to network and receive first-hand industry experience.

Structure

  • 528 credit points. Communication component: 192 credit points (16 units)
  • 4 core units and 12 major units. Law component: 336 credit points. This is comprised of 19 core units, including units based upon the 'Priestley 11' required for admission to legal practice in Australia and 8 electives. Students are able to deepen their knowledge in areas of interest through their elective choices which reflect areas of legal practice and emerging developments in law.

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • Assumed knowledge: English, or Literature, or English and Literature, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C).

Recognition

Journalism: Australian Journalists' Association (AJA) section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA). Law (Honours): Graduates satisfy the academic requirements for admission as a solicitor and/or barrister in all Australian states and territories. It is also recognised for admission purposes in West and East Malaysia, India, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Study pathways

Pathways to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Master of Teaching (Secondary), or Master of Philosophy are available. Students may be able to claim advanced standing for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes. QUT advanced standing rules apply.
