Graduate Certificate in Podiatric Therapeutics

Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Postgraduate
CRICOS: 00213J

This program responds to legislative changes that allow podiatrists to use a range of drugs to treat podiatric conditions. It is the only course in Australia to integrate the theoretical and case simulation components, and some of the supervised practice component, required by the Podiatry Board of Australia for endorsement in the use of scheduled medicines for the treatment of podiatric conditions. The course is supplementary to general or specialist registration as a podiatrist.

Designed for

Registered podiatrists

Structure

Offered on a part-time basis over two semesters, there will be on-campus intensive sessions for the discussion of key content, peer review and interaction, supervised practicum in QUT Health Clinics and assessment. These intensives will be supplemented by online resources using interactive scenarios to simulate key dilemmas and challenges in clinical practice. A revision of the fundamental biomedical sciences related to pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics is incorporated at the start of the program. The units of study across the course will be accompanied by a formative ePortfolio where students will measure their application of developing knowledge and skills. In the final semester, students acquire the clinical decision-making practical skills required for prescribing scheduled medicines.

Subjects

  • Podiatric therapeutics

Standard entry requirements

  • A completed recognised 4-year Bachelor Degree (or equivalent) in podiatry
  • Applicants must have current registration with the Podiatry Board of Australia

Recognition

The Graduate Certificate of Podiatric Therapeutics has been approved by the Australian and New Zealand Podiatry Accreditation Council as providing a qualification in podiatric therapeutics (Part A) for the purpose of an endorsement for scheduled medicines in the podiatry profession.

Study pathways

Subject to accreditation approval, successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Podiatric Therapeutics will allow podiatrists to make substantial progress towards completing the Board's requirements for endorsement in the use of scheduled medicines. It is likely that graduates will need to organise a number of external supervised practice sessions outside the course in order to meet all requirements of the Board.
