By combining studies in mechanical engineering and biotechnology, you'll be equipped to manage technical and professional challenges in this growing area. As an RMIT mechanical engineering and biotechnology double degree student you'll develop the skills required for the planning, design, development and improvement of machinery used in everyday life. You'll be equipped with skills in genetic engineering, industrial microbiology, molecular agriculture and bioinformatics; and also learn about the regulatory, ethical and legal issues in biotechnology. You'll be prepared for the workplace via hands-on experience in our well-equipped laboratories, project work and work experience in industry. Careers are available in design, manufacturing and testing in government and commercial organisations. Significant opportunities are anticipated in processing industries such as fermentation, food, cell products, and vaccines both in Australia and overseas.

Entry Requirements:

Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 25 in one of Mathematical Methods (any) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).


Year 1 and 2-In your first two years, you'll study basic mechanical engineering and science courses. These are aimed at developing competence in essential analytical problem-solving skills and design capabilities. Year 3-You will focus on biotechnology skills studying areas such as immunology, microbiology, genetics and molecular biology and food manufacture. Years 4 and 5-In the final years of the program, specialist mechanical elective courses are offered in various streams of expertise. You'll also complete a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 5. You'll also consolidate your biotechnology studies through advanced genetic and biology studies.

Study Pathways:

There are no articulation agreements with this double degree, however students with related qualifications in mechanical engineering or biotechnology may be considered for exemptions on a case-by-case basis. GPA will be considered as part of the application for advanced standing.
