Bachelor of Engineering - Telecommunications Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Computer Science

RMIT University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00122A

In this double degree you'll combine studies in telecommunications engineering with computer science to gain a unique skill set. As an RMIT telecommunications engineering student, you'll develop knowledge and skills to design, build and manage systems that transfer, store and manage information via wireless, cable, optical fibre, and satellite communications. Through your computer science studies you'll gain extensive knowledge of computer systems infrastructure, software methods and technologies. You'll also gain advanced knowledge and skills in developing network-based real-life computing applications. By combining the knowledge of telecommunications engineering with skills in computer science, you are ideally suited to undertake a leading role in system and network applications development and management, particularly within the area of network engineering.

Structure

Years 1, 2 and 3 - In the first three years, you will learn the fundamentals of computer science and telecommunications engineering, plus the mathematics and physics that support these disciplines. Years 4 and 5 - Your final two years are specialisation years, aiming at making you work-ready. You will develop advanced skills in computer science and telecommunication technologies. Your final-year (capstone) project will develop and reinforce the skills and knowledge you need - as defined by Engineers Australia - to commence your professional engineering career. You will develop professional skills in research, problem solving, teamwork, leadership, project management and communication. You'll also complete a work-integrated learning (industry experience) elective in Year 2, 3 or 4.

Subjects

  • Computer and network security, Computer animation, Computer architecture, Computer hardware, Computer networks, Computer programming, Computer science, Computing, Computing (networks), Control systems, Data communications, Data networks, Database systems, Databases (advanced programming), Electronics, Engineering, Engineering (communication), Engineering (electronics), Engineering (telecommunications), Network management, Satellite communication, Wireless & Mobile communications.

Standard entry requirements

  • Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in one of Mathematical Methods (any) or Specialist Mathematics
  • And a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).

Recognition

This program will apply for full accreditation by Engineers Australia as soon as possible within the accreditation timelines set down by Engineers Australia. Upon accreditation being granted, graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. Full membership as a professional engineer may be obtained after an appropriate period of professional practice. Australia is one of 15 countries that are signatories to the International Engineering Alliance, also known as the Washington Accord, for professional engineers. Upon full accreditation of this program graduates from this degree will have their qualification recognised in all countries that are signatories to the Accord. The computer science component of this double degree program is accredited at professional level by the Australian Computer Society which accredits information and communication technology-related programs in Australia.

Further information

The type of careers this qualification leads to may include design and manufacture telecommunications products, telecommunications service providers, education research, development organisations, government organisations, transport, defence, security, meteorology and emergency services, consulting or commercial business.
