As an RMIT Statistics student you will prepare for a career in statistics and operations research through statistical and mathematical computation and modelling. You'll apply problem-solving and data analysis to industry problems ranging from banking and finance to environmental and biological modelling. First year provides foundation studies in statistics and mathematics, while second and third year studies include projects and placements within industry as well as opportunities for global exchange. Your studies will focus on getting and cleaning data; statistical analysis and computing; linear models and design of experiments; sampling and quality control; statistical inference; multivariate analysis; forecasting and sports statistics. Statisticians are often employed as part of multidisciplinary teams in a range of industries and businesses that require decision making based on data.

Entry Requirements:

Current Year 12 prerequisites units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical Methods (any) or Specialist Mathematics and a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).


In Year 1 you'll study the basics of calculus, statistics, discrete mathematics, mathematical programming and professional practice. In Years 2 and 3 you'll learn about the mathematical foundations of statistics together with the numerous areas of application. It is at this stage that you choose your specialisation. You will select eight courses from dozens of different electives in these specialisations to customise your studies for particular learning outcomes.

This is a fast growing profession and there is a chronic under supply of statistics graduates. The Australian Government forecasts strong increase in demand for statisticians in the foreseeable future. In 2016, LinkedIn ranked the number one skill sought after among Australian employers as being statistical analysis and data mining.


Graduates are eligible to apply for graduate membership of the Statistical Society of Australia and graduate membership of the Australian Society for Operations Research.
