This program provides advanced training and education in the major disciplines of laboratory medicine. It is offered for graduates from general science/biomedical science degrees that have a biological science focus. These graduates would have had limited or no experience in diagnostic laboratory disciplines. This coursework program is designed to provide an advanced qualification and enable graduates to apply a range of diagnostic procedures in a clinical pathology laboratory. They will have high level skills in analysis and knowledge integration which is relevant to their area of specialisation.

192 credit points. This incorporates the Graduate Diploma (96 credit points). The Master of Laboratory Medicine program will allow students to specialise in one clinical pathology discipline.

Standard entry requirements

  • An Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in a cognate discipline (laboratory medicine, biomedical or biological sciences or medicine) with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0 out of 4.0
  • Or An Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in a cognate discipline with at least five years of relevant work experience in diagnostic pathology.


Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) in the UK.

Study pathways

Upon successful completion of 96 credit points, they may exit with a Graduate Diploma in Laboratory Medicine.
