Master of Applied Science - Applied Chemistry (By Research)

Students undertake a research project under supervision of an academic. In addition to the research project experience is provided in research methods, literature search and critical review, project planning and management, technical writing and presentation skills. The outcome is a thesis that is externally examined for successful completion of the degree. Major research directions are: Materials chemistry - microtechnologies, inorganic, catalysts, organic synthesis, functional surfaces and polymer science; and Environmental and analytical science - Gippsland Lakes Catchment Authority, separation science, occupational health and safety.

Entry Requirements:

A four-year bachelor degree with at least a credit average in the final undergraduate year; or another recognised award deemed to be equivalent in character and standard to a four-year undergraduate degree, with at least a credit average in the final undergraduate year. Alternatively applicants may provide evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and experience that satisfies the Dean of the School of Graduate Research or nominee that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and the potential for research sufficient to undertake the proposed program.

Study Pathways:

The Master program candidates can apply to convert to a PhD after 1 year of study if their supervisor believes they are capable of completing a PhD.

Further information:

Graduates completing these programs will have gained experience in planning, organising and implementing a research project. They will satisfy the requirements of many employers in the chemical, environmental and related industries who require research and development personnel. Honours and Masters graduates also satisfy the entry requirements for a research doctorate (PhD) degree.
