Certificate II in Maritime Operations - Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal

This qualification is part of the Maritime Training Package. It is suitable for people who work as a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal in the maritime industry and command a commercial marine vessel up to 12 metres in length with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine.

Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems; Operate inboard and outboard motors; Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems; Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment; Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel; Meet WHS requirements; Survive at sea using survival craft; Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres; plus more.

Established in 1986,Seafood Training Tasmania is a not-for-profit Registered Training Organisation that provides nationally accredited training and assessment from the Seafood Industry Training Package and the Maritime Training Package. It was established by the Tasmanian seafood industry to make sure the seafood and maritime industries' training needs were met at the right time and in the right location.

STT is managed by a board whose members represent the sectors of the Tasmanian seafood industry. Most of STT's training is conducted at its Hobart Training Centre at Salamanca, however courses are also offered each year in St Helens, Smithton and Strahan. Training is also conducted in other regions where there is a clear industry demand.
